Track Name: Annabelle
annabelle writes her name slowly
down the cover page of a QA report
her brow furrowed at the way that she is shaping her 'e's
holding calls, blowing off meetings
she will take her time
it isn't looking right
it isn't looking right

annabelle locks her door hourly
the signs they made associate her name with accounting
and that's why she won't go into the hall
the dotted lines calmly inquire
if her signature is even hers at all

her handwriting,
oh it was hiding the truth
white brown, spiral bound
notebook she left in a middle school locker room
her handwriting
it was remarkably blue
both sides, perfect lines
inscribed "annabelle martin" over algebra two

she says "it isn't looking right these days"

annabelle writes her name slowly
down her office wall, the pen strokes fall
till she's staring at the column where her fountain pen has faded away
the column where her fountain pen has faded away

her handwriting
oh, it was hiding the truth
white brown, spiral bound
notebook she left in a middle school locker room
her handwriting
it was remarkably blue
both sides, perfect lines
her handwriting
Track Name: Entomology
this morning you were telling me about the way
a moth avoids detection through genetic traits
and as you spoke old memories began to shake
and crawl from all their hiding places in my brain

entomology was your desired trade
you talked about it proudly when we used to date
i am not surprised to see that nothing's changed
cause in my mind you're frozen in a glass display

i vowed to capture you
i was so in love
but i pulled you apart
coldly analyzed
your heart your mind
i drew some diagrams then
i threw you away
i threw you away
Track Name: Pizza Boy
i swear this is true

howard lay
open coffin in camus, washington state
there were rows of pews
to carry his loved ones, i was there too

through the side
came a pizzaboy carrying four pizza pies
in full view of the body
i watched the pizza boy get confused

as he approached a mourner
asking who had placed the order
and who was going to pay?

i swear this is true

he got the wrong address
the pizzaboy left the funeral fast
and i knew if howard were there
he'd be laughing too
Track Name: She Said She Was A Soldier
she said she was a soldier when i met her years ago
entering the college near my home
it was august in the valley
at a coffee shop we spoke about our lives
the little songs we wrote
we were locked in steady conversation
when i asked if she'd explain to me the term she self-applied
when she answered carefully she looked me in the eyes
"i've been fighting since the day that i was born"

oh, she said she was a soldier

as i began to fight with her
i looked her in the eyes
she confessed her love before thanksgiving day
my spine had left me ill equipped to handle such a blow
i couldn't find a single thing to say
so i turned and fled to california where her songs would never find me
i pretended not to care
though i said i was a soldier and the victory was mine
i'd been hiding since the day that i was born

we were going to be famous
it was obvious to see (i was only twenty when we parted ways)
now she's married to a decent man, i know he treats her well
she says she'd like a record deal someday
i'm alone and hiding in los angeles
my limited perspective sees her giving up the fight
but i learned as i got older we should never trust our eyes
they've been blinded since the day that we were born

oh, she said she was a soldier
Track Name: Termination Notice
'notice of change of relationship'
was the verbiage they used at the top of your pink slip
we laughed at the way the words would not say
what they intended to say: you were fired that day

in their clothes, with pinched toes
you left your desk the security bro
he packed up what was yours and
through double doors you left for the very last time

you didn't act like it appeared from nowhere, no
you saw it coming you were pretty sure why
you watched them stumble over bullet points reading down
fielding your terse replies
i know, i know
it made you mad though you hadn't been with them that long
i know, i know
you'd given a part of yourself that they couldn't give back

its gone

'notice of change of relationship'
still hung in its place on the corner of your fridge
we sat, i swayed as you tried to say
what you intended to say: we were over that day

cold toes and ice floes
i left your house and you gathered my clothes
folded and packed so when i came back
it'd be for the very last time

i didn't act like it appeared from nowhere
no i saw it coming i was pretty sure why
i watched you stumble over bullet points leaning down
fielding my terse replies
i know, i know
it made you sad though i hadn't been with you that long
i know, i know
i'd given a part of myself that you couldn't give back

it's gone
